Dates to Remember for Incoming 2020-21 Lawyer Candidates

Candidates are required to also access their Law Society online account for further deadlines, notices and requirements pertaining to their status in the Licensing Process.

Deadlines are calculated in BUSINESS days, not calendar days unless otherwise indicated.

Application and Transcripts

  • Licensing Term
    2020-21 Licensing Year May 1, 2020 – April 30, 2021.

    Candidates who enroll in the 2020-21 Lawyer Licensing Process and/or register to begin any part of the Licensing Process in the 2020-21 cycle will be considered a 2020-21 candidate.
     
    2020-21 Licensing Term  May 1, 2020 – April 30, 2023.

    All candidates are given up to three licensing years to complete the Lawyer Licensing Process requirements.
  • Application Deadlines
    Online application launch October 2019
    Application (online and paper copy) due date December 2, 2019
    Application fee due date December 2, 2019
  • Transcript Deadlines
    Transcript due date August 17, 2020*

    *For third year law students writing the summer sitting as a first attempt.

    All other candidates must have their institution submit a final official transcript/NCA certificate no later than the examination registration deadline, or if articling, prior to commencing articles; or by the LPP registration deadline.

  • Accommodations
    Examination Accommodation request due date New applicants to the Licensing Process must submit accommodation request forms and supporting documentation by the licensing process application deadline. Candidates seeking a revision to an existing, Law Society-approved accommodation plan or requesting an accommodation based on a new or emerging condition/ground must make a request prior to the applicable examination registration deadline for the licensing examination.   • Examination Registration Deadlines

    To be fully registered for a licensing examination, the following conditions must be met:

    • If a candidate must re-schedule, re-write or defer an examination sitting, they are required to submit an Examination Registration or Deferment-Online Examinations to Licensing and Accreditation in advance of the applicable examination registration deadline so that they can be invoiced and pay by the registration deadline for their sitting.
    • Candidates must be fully enrolled in the Licensing Process well in advance of the examination registration deadline in order to have access to the invoices for the examinations and study materials.
    • Candidates must make payment for the examinations and study materials no later than the applicable registration deadline.
    • Candidates must have their institutions (or the NCA) submit a final official transcript/NCA certificate to the Licensing Process office no later than the examination registration deadline for their examination.  

    Candidates writing the June 2020 examinations and/or candidates who want early access to study materials
    June Examination, Study Material and Experiential Training Fee due April 15, 2020

    Examination and Study Material fees are due by this date for those writing in June and/or those who wish to pick up materials in person during the in-person distribution period. All other examination fees are due on or before the examination registration deadline for each examination.

  • Examination Deferral Deadlines

    To defer an examination to a future sitting, candidates must submit a Request for Change or Deferment Form to the Licensing and Accreditation Department (by email)by the prescribed deferral deadline.

  • Study Materials - Release Dates

    Candidates who wish to obtain access to the study materials must make payment for the materials by April 15, 2020.

    All candidates must make payment no later than the applicable examination registration deadline.  Please note that candidates will not have online access to the study materials until fees have been paid and have been released for the licensing year.

  • Examination Results

    Examination results will be released approximately 6-8 weeks after the examination date, unless otherwise indicated.

    Thereafter, candidates should enrol by the examination registration deadline on the invoice they wish to add to a payment plan, or by December 10, 2020, which ever date is sooner.
     
     
     
  • Repayable Allowance Program
    Repayable Allowance Program – application due date 30 BUSINESS days prior to any examination registration deadline to allow sufficient time for consideration

Experiential Training Program

  • Articling
    In order to facilitate Convocation’s decision to reduce the minimum required length of articling terms during the 2020-2021 licensing cycle from 10 months to 8 months, candidates who wish to be called to the bar in June 2021 must commence their articling term by the following dates:  
     For candidates undertaking an 8-month articling term:      October 7, 2020
     For candidates undertaking a 10-month articling term:    August 7, 2020
     
    Articles of Clerkship due date To be submitted once the articling term begins and no later than 10 BUSINESS days after the commencement of articles.
