Call for comment – Short-term pro bono legal services rules

The call for comment is now closed.

The Law Society sought input on proposed amendments to the lawyers’ Rules of Professional Conduct, to extend the modified conflict of interest standard in the short-term pro bono legal services rules to Legal Aid Ontario lawyers, who provide short-term pro bono legal services.

The Law Society also sought input on whether the short-term pro bono legal services rules should be expanded to include other not-for-profit service providers.

Currently, the Rules extend the modified conflicts standard only to volunteer lawyers who provide short-term pro-bono services under the auspices of a pro bono or not-for-profit legal services provider and lawyers providing services under the auspices of a Pro Bono Ontario program.

The Law Society’s Professional Regulation Committee is considering the comments received and will report back to Convocation (the Law Society’s Board of Directors) with its recommendations.
