Law Society’s 2022 budget approved
Convocation approved the 2022 budget proposed by management. This budget reduces annual fees for licensees and fees for licensing candidates while investing in library resources and maintaining the organization’s solid long-term financial position. The budget ensures progression of strategic priorities including modernizing the systems and processes that support the effective regulation of the legal professions. Read the news release.
Rules of practice and procedure
Convocation approved amendments to Rule 13.3 of the Law Society Tribunal Rules of Practice and Procedure regarding openness of the Tribunal, to reflect recent Supreme Court of Canada jurisprudence. See the full report.
Proposed new rule re: Failure to co-operate
The Tribunal Committee is proposing to amend the Rules of Practice and Procedure with the addition of Rule 21 – Failure to Co-operate Applications. The proposed new rule would streamline the summary hearing process. The Committee is accepting comments on the proposed rule until November 30, 2021. For more information see the full report.
Articling term length
Convocation agreed to renew the eight-month minimum articling term for the 2022-2023 licensing cycle. See the full report.
Treasurer’s Roundtable on Women in Law – summary report
On April 21, the Law Society hosted the inaugural Treasurer’s Roundtable on Women in Law in collaboration with the Canadian Chapter of the International Association of Women Judges. The Law Society’s Women in Law Advisory Group will consider the summary report and its recommendations and provide advice on how the Law Society can demonstrate leadership to support women in law. Equity Advisory Group appointments
New individual and organizational members were appointed to the Equity Advisory Group for a three-year term. The Equity Advisory Group provides advice to the Law Society on equity and diversity issues. See the full report.
