Honorary LLD presented to the Honourable George Czutrin
A degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LLD) was presented to Justice Czutrin, for his dedication to access to family justice. The Law Society awards honorary doctorates each year to distinguished individuals in recognition of outstanding achievements in the legal profession, the rule of law or the cause of justice. Treasurer election
At the close of nominations of candidates for the election of Treasurer on May 13, there was one candidate nominated for the election of Treasurer: Teresa Donnelly, nominated by Robert Burd and Nancy Lockhart. Therefore, Teresa Donnelly is declared to be elected as Treasurer for the term June 23, 2021 to June 23, 2022. This will be announced at June 23, 2021 Convocation.
Election of Quinn Ross as bencher
Quinn M. Ross was elected as bencher to fill the vacancy created by the appointment of Justice Paul Cooper to the Ontario Court of Justice.
Anti-money laundering requirements
Convocation approved by-law amendments to reflect changes to the Federation of Law Societies of Canada’s Model Rules to fight money laundering and terrorist financing. The Law Society will produce supports to assist licensees with understanding and complying with the new requirements prior to the amendments coming into effect January 1, 2022. Paralegal regulation exemptions
Convocation approved amendments to By-Law 4 to end exemptions from paralegal licensure for public servants in the service of the Office of the Worker Adviser and the Office of the Employer Adviser, with certain exceptions, effective January 1, 2022. Certain exemptions were created at the outset of paralegal regulation in 2007 to avoid disrupting the provision of legal services in essential areas. Convocation has directed that exemptions should be reduced over time through dialogue, negotiation and gradual integration. For more information, see the report to Convocation.
Jack Braithwaite appointed vice-chair of Tribunal
Convocation approved the appointment of Jack Braithwaite as vice-chair of the Hearing Division of the Law Society Tribunal.
