LAWPRO insurance premiums announced 

Convocation approved LAWPRO's report setting out the Law Society’s professional liability insurance program for 2015 — their 20th year operating the program. The base premium for professional liability insurance coverage for Ontario lawyers in 2015 remains, for the fifth consecutive year, at $3,350 per lawyer. Full report.

ABS discussion paper available

The Alternative Business Structures Working Group of the Professional Regulation Committee provided Convocation with Alternative Business Structures and the Legal Profession in Ontario: A Discussion Paper, and through the paper, is seeking comments from the professions, the public, and other interested parties on the subject of ABS. The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2014. The Law Society has not yet decided whether ABS should be permitted in Ontario. Based on input received, the Working Group’s dialogue with lawyers and paralegals will continue and will help it determine what actions to take, if any, on the issue. Rules of Practice and Procedure amended

Convocation amended Rule 22.07 of the Hearing Division Rules of Practice and Procedure to require licensees to provide a pre-hearing conference memorandum. Under the previous rule, only the Law Society was required to do so. Full report

Adjudicator performance development process approved

Convocation approved the Tribunal chair’s proposed adjudicator performance development process as part of the enhanced Tribunal model approved in 2012 to ensure effective adjudication of Law Society tribunals. Full report.

Human Rights Monitoring Group interventions approved

Convocation approved interventions in the following cases:

• Lawyer Intigam Aliyev – Azerbaijan 

• Lawyer Waleed Abu al-Khair – Saudi Arabia

By-Law 3 amended re: bencher election process

By-Law 3 [Benchers, Convocation and Committees] was amended to implement Convocation’s June 2014 decision to extend the time for the opening of voting following the preparation of the voters’ list, and to make clarifying amendments. Full report

Application of national requirement to joint and dual degrees deferred

Convocation approved the deferral of the application of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada’s National Requirement to joint and dual degree programs until January 2017 to provide the Federation and law schools with appropriate preparation time. The National Requirement specifies the competencies and skills that graduates of Canadian common law programs must attain. Full report.
